The problem was that my database password had a $ in it. If the settings.php file is changed to use single quotes rather than double, this will solve the problem for future users! Thanks for having a great product and keeping it FREE! You guys rock!
Perhaps (i think it actually failed for me but maybe that time I entered it wrong), but why not just have single quotes? Also, more informative errors might help out as well.
