Do you know a forum that use Vanilla but has removed the Vanilla text and hidden it? This will likely bring less users to Vanilla & is against the rules.
This will be the official blacklist (if it is is ok for the admin) and you can submit sites which are breaking the rules.

    Here is the list:
http://politicalwire.com/cloakroom/ - Hiding the text, looks like they want all the creds.
    http://www.steorn.net/forum/ Hiding it. Bad.
http://www.jamendo.com/us/forums/ Hiding the powered by Vanilla text. Idiotic.

Original thread: http://www.redswoosh.net/ a new supercool idea to use less bandwith for download uses Vanilla.
    It is nice! :D

Windows only service? Short sighted, not interested!

The windows-only part doesn't bother me one bit, what does bother me is that it might be spyware. Or at least there are enough people suggesting it (and complaining about strange probes). Redswoosh themselves of course are very eager to tell people that they are not handing out spyware.

I really hope that this is a communication error or something...
But claiming that they were "creating" a password reset feature for vanilla as if they were coding it is lame.

see comment 5 in this thread to see what I´m blabling about:

Well, they may have integrated Vanilla with their own login system - in which case they *could* be writing their own components...

TechCrunch discussing them.. Mark Cuban helped fund them. interesting.

    oh also, in the comments,

They have a forum but there’s no button to “create a new thread” or something like that.

Oh, yes, it is Vanilla. You can even look at the HTML source, and you'll see that the note is still there, they've just hidden it using CSS. Really poor form. :/

Is the obligation to reference Vanilla or Lussumo part of the open source Vanilla licence?

I believe there is a comment in the code that requests to retain the 'powered by' message. I recall Mark asking someone else to restore it as well.

Some forums like Johnson & Johnson don't have it, but I believe Mark personally set them up that way.

You know, it doesn't bother me a whole lot that they took the "About Vanilla" thing off the page. I'm sure that happens all the time with Vanilla since it's just so easy to dismantle. But if they changed it to just say something like "powered by Vanilla", that would be nice.

Yeah, I mean there using something that some one (mark!) put a lot of hard work into, they probably want it to look more professional and more like they made it themselves!
See it would annoy me, does it not annoy you in the slightest Mark?

To be fair, I think that when you're releasing open source software meant for the masses you'll eventually learn or have to accept that people who are using your project will rewrite, add and destroy things every way imaginable. Does hiding the fact that the forum is running Vanilla matter? Probably not unless the person attempting to lay a claim that they wrote the entire under-belly in an effort to cash in on someone elses hard work which was free to begin with (think back to cherryOS). That's worse.

The option exists regardless, most can tell you what forum software is running just by looking at it or by it's enabled features. In some regard, hiding this information is useful to prevent attacks (think of hiding apaches signature strings). Because if you don't know what version or brand of software is running, executing an attack would require a little more effort. Hiding the fact that it's Vanilla or which version doesn't really damage much, it only leaves people in the dark who are curious about which forum software it is.

    What lech said.

The only thing that really bugs me about it is that I'm losing clicks when people remove that stuff. This software is only successful if people hear about it. It is all word-of-mouth advertising. So when people use it and remove those links, they're making the project fail.

Not all people want the Vanilla 1 promo in their sidebar, but I do think they should at least put a link somewhere (in the footer for example). A "powered by" would be cool with a nice small Lussumo leaf-icon ^^

I to find that long text bothering me so I changed it to powered by vanilla first day. It is still linkback and it clearly states that forum software is vanilla powered. Also I hate when people take those powered off but most of times I find default text too long or inapropriate and the main reason .... hackers ! btw ... my forum is at http://www.eliminateme.com

...again with no mentioning of Vanilla. I think Mark is very pragmatic and reasonable about this in not getting too upset. But a "powered by Vanilla" text line is a courtesy one could demand.

If you look at the source it's still in there so it's hidden by CSS. They might not have done it on purpose.

Yeah, I just looked at that now and at the bottom of each page there it says "Powered by <company name>" and did a small double-take. Now I kind of want to eat some of my own words from what I previously wrote and regurgitate it back up to include "Any well known person(s) / company / product which uses and appreciates vanilla, should at the very least include some small linkback reference in their sidebar / footers or elsewhere for their users to at least know what it is". I kind of feel that "powered by" branding is strongly misleading there unless Mark OK'd it.

Although having checked that link to Elektonika it appears to be a web design company. They really should know better. They're making it look like they've designed the forum when all they've done is a bit of CSS.

also, let's keep this discussion rational. no witch hunts and flying off the handle by mailing them or bombing their boards or anything along those lines. If there's one thing I hate, it's zealots :) but we don't need to give anyone here a bad name. especially lussumo & vanilla.
