I installed Vanilla a few days ago on my webspace and it's awesome. Clean design and it's not as overloaded as phpBB or Burning Board.
But I think it needs smiles, because they can help users to show their feelings in posts. I've found a pack of smilies that would look good integrated in Vanilla. http://fantaspace.lima-city.de/smiles.zip

    Cheers, Tim

I tried adding a new folder with smiles and got a ton of errors - how much tweaking is involved to add your own?

It should "just work" - did for me. What errors do you get?

    I love Mazeguy smilies.

If you get errors when adding smilies, it will mostly have to do with file permissions. The smilies.js and smilies.php should be writeable.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a smilie set that isn't rubbish and has at least some consistency? I've been trauling google and been dissapointed with almost every set I've seen.

I've always wanted to extract the smilie set out of iChat (from Mac OSX), they are pretty nice, not spectacular but consistent as you say. Might get around to it one day soon.

Here's a package with emoticons I use on my WoW forum (280 smilies all categorized!!). Put them in the extension folder, make sure they're readable and rebuild the vanillacons!

I get the following error message if I try to add any GIF files or any folders to the smilies folder:
Warning: fopen(/hsphere/local/home/dstewart/thebay3d.com/forum/extensions/Vanillacons/smilies.js): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /hsphere/local/home/dstewart/thebay3d.com/forum/extensions/Vanillacons/default.php on line 58

Warning: fopen(/hsphere/local/home/dstewart/thebay3d.com/forum/extensions/Vanillacons/smilies.php): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /hsphere/local/home/dstewart/thebay3d.com/forum/extensions/Vanillacons/default.php on line 59

Warning: fwrite(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /hsphere/local/home/dstewart/thebay3d.com/forum/extensions/Vanillacons/default.php on line 80

    and it continues to lines 81, 82, & 83.

I'm guessing this means that the PHP and JS files are not writable? How do I make them writable?

    :~D

Most ftp clients can set file permissions. Just right click the uploaded file, choose "chmod" en check all writeable/readable checkboxes.
