Listen, I just wanted to send out a big thank you to all of you who have linked Vanilla on so many different sites online. Since it's quiet, unannounced release over the weekend, traffic has been slowly increasing. As of right now Vanilla has been downloaded over 400 times: a feat which took the filebrowser almost a month.

I really appreciate all of your support and I look forward to seeing Vanilla out there being used :)

Now I'm going to go get some real work done :)

of course everyone who convinces a client or boss to use vanilla should also try to convince that client or boss to donate. i definitely will :)
  1.  # 9
haha. And they should get them to covince all their rich boss friends to use it and donate. Soon we'll have taken over the world!

P.s. Mark, how's the new hosting going, and how's the traffic count? (both on downloads and visitors to community.luss?)

I wonder if this thing is going to keep on picking up or if it will peter off.

The filebrowser always peters off very quickly, but with Vanilla there might be a lot more exposure as new people sign up for different implementations of Vanilla all over the place.

Yeah ok ok, I messed up my url... tshck tshck....

    -------------

Meant to say, del.icio.us is cool

    BUT....

the interface and styling is pretty, well, brutal... although it does work ok.... for instance there's not even a link to the 'tag' page on the navbar... i could go on....

Agreed, it is charming... I find it a faster/more reliable/more interesting way to pick up new links for topics that it's users specialise in (web design, css etc) than google now...

http://johnvey.com/features/deliciousdirector/ is a step in an intersting direction though I think....

Kewl. I just found Vanilla through the del.icio.us popular list, and I love what I've seen so far.

BTW, I installed PHPBB a year or two ago for a community of users who had been using QuickTopic. First comment was "This thing has more buttons than a Klingon starship!". That pretty much summed up the experience.

personally, i figure any endeavor that provokes a reference to *anything* klingon was a complete and utter failure and should be aborted asap.

    How's it looking now, mark?

And this whole slowing down thing is really starting to bug me... it makes catching up after an evening off-net so much harder! :(

  6.  # 41
I dont think so. I must admit theres a definate link between times when i'm sure i've posted but it turns out i havent and times when i'm a little drunk. But still.

    Psst. My icon broke?
  7.  # 42
Just as a pointer, i dunno how much you get paid, but if every person who downloaded it had paid just $1, that'd be $1000 for getting out of bed today (that and using all your time coding it for the past year)...not millionaire stuff in todays world but at the same time not an alltogether insignificant account.
Donations arent such a bad idea after all.

What do we see here? A perfect start for a perfect script.. Like a rocket just to the top of the delicious's popular list.. :D

Keep us updated with the download stats.. Maybe a public counter on the frontpage just like FireFox has?

And: Don't forget to mail me about the further plans for a German community. As you can see: People are waiting for it. ;-)
The translation should be done on Sunday. A demo is running here: http://www.forensoftware.de/vanilla/

mini - I know. I thought about that this morning - $1 each ain't bad at all.

But I really want the software to remain free - so that's what will happen. I'm in talks with some colleagues about creating and opening a store. Hopefully we can drive some of the traffic from Vanilla that-a-way and make some money.

MrNase - Sweet! Can't wait to make that available to all. I am working on a new setup for the documentation, and I will be in touch when it's ready :)
  8.  # 45
Well yeah, i'm not saying the software shouldnt be free. But then if 1 in 10 people give a $10 donation...

Otherwise yeah, use vanilla for the fame and rip people off subtly ;)

it's the tagline on the 'douchebag' role. it's meant to be applied to a member when they're acting like a complete and utter douchebag. strangely, minisweeper is not a complete and utter douchebag. go figure.
