How easy would it be to add a text field to a users profile so that when I visit a profile they have a chunk of text about themselves and their interests? I don't mind doing the coding myself, but I'd appreciate a pointing in the right direction on the following steps:
Step one - new database field (I guess the extension needs to determine whether or not this exists and create it if it does not)
Step two - display the contents of the new field on the profile page and style it nicely
Step three - allow the user to edit their own "about me" details (do I need a whole new page to allow them to do this, or can I tag it onto the bottom of the "personal information" page?)

    Thoughts appreciated as usual :)

You realise you can add tags to your profile, right? Like how on mine i have 'gallery' and stuff?

Yah, I just added a quick about me to my profile here and it seems to do what you want it to do. Only thing you'll probably want to change is the max-length, unless you are happy with the amount of characters that mine has as I used all available.

I was thinking more along the lines of having it in the right hand of the current profile, where the "Role History" and "Add-ons by this user" stuff lives. Make it more of a focal point for the profile, rather than an afterthought.

@bigshow: I'm planning exactly the same feature. I was hoping to accomplish it by using the Predefined Attributes extension + making a custom theme for the view profile page.
