    Adds the YahooUI text editor to the comment form. This WYSIWYG editor is notable because it is fully cross-platform, including support for Safari 2+.

    http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/editor/

    This version also enables image uploading, as described here:

    This would be so cool if it was packaged into an addition.

    It's a formatter I would actually use, much better than the current offerings which are bloated, slow and not fully compatible.

    I have tested it and it works beautifully, I can actually see my people using it and loving it.

    Any one capable of doing it? We'll name the next comet after you!

    Per the link below I had to email the extension to Minisweeper so he could add the extension. The .zip file is just an image right now because the full file size exceeded the normal max upload.

    Large add-on file - help! # 7

    Minisweeper, did you receive the extension from me? I used the address in your profile page.

    OK, for now I've uploaded the extension at Divshare. You can get it here:

    Hmmm, does not work well in Safari 3 under Leopard, this is a shame because the demo on Yahoo worked perfectly.

    The font and style menus appear offset about 1" to the left of where they should be and are not selectable.

    Also, the picture upload does not work.

    Bummer :-(

    I can confirm the "Font Name and Size" and "Paragraph Style" offset bugs that Wanderer mentioned (in fx2.0.0.9). However, I can select the fonts by clicking the respective height in the dropdown menu. Clicking on the actual font name does not work.

    Image uploading doesn't work for me either, even when the /img/ directory is 777

    Tut tut, thumbs.db in the /img/ directory :P

    That would be my guess for the list items not showing up in the correct place – it wouldn't explain the images not uploading though...

    Did I read somewhere that there was additional "hacking" required to get uploads to work?

    Later...
    OK the supplied version has the hack built in.
    This demo works OK in Safari except for the picture upload bit.
    http://allmybrain.com/yuieditor/

    By the way, IE 7 plays well with it because as usual, this is the default standard by which all morons cpmply.

    IE6 and IE7 are the most used browser on internet so web application that doesn't work for them are quite useless. It would be great if everybody had drop IE for a decent browser, but that's not the case.

    And we already had this discussion before, YUI editor has been built on safari2 and them adapted to the other Grade A YUI browser.

    We've had this discussion but nothing sunk in.
    IE is NOT standards compliant.
    Writing for such a browser is selling your soul.
    Write to standards, let things break on IE, let the people demand compliance!

    Not making website compatible with IE might have an impact if Yahoo or Google were doing it. If the websites that are using YUI doesn't work in IE, IE user will just stop using these sites.

    It is not about our souls. W3C Standards are not the stone tablets. You should seriously stop to worship Apple and Steve Job.

    Wanderer, my heart (and soul) completely agrees with you. But if you are writing web software to actually enable you to earn a living, then it's just not practical. Idealistic views have their place and push us to be better, but we can't always indulge them immediately 100%.

    Dinoboff mate, it's nothing to do with Apple nor Steve Jobs, it's all about principles.
    Stash you're right of course when it comes to earning a living, the almighty dollar always dictates you cater to your biggest customer base and screw everyone else, that's business.
    But what about the rest of us?
    If you are not part of the solution, you are the problem!

    What most good web developers do nowadays is write to the standards and fix for IE. This is the best long term approach and also often ends up being the least work even in the short-to-medium term.

    Spot on again mate, however I won't cover up for the inadequacies of a huge corporation making millions off the ignorant masses.

    Expose them I say, chip away little by little.

    I have converted 3 people this month to Windows Safari, they were a bit "so what?" at first but as I show them this and that and point out the thinking behind it they are starting to appreciate it, especially its elegant, simple uncluttered interface.

    Of course in this office we're all stuck with IE because the web-based help desk app we use is IE only (*sigh*), but for other browsing Safari is popular.

    "...write to the standards and fix for IE..." so true, so moronic and so sad at the same time.

    I can't get the divshare link to work in any browser (FFX, IE) , so I'm not able to download this extension. It sounds great and I'm looking forward to trying it but is it posted anywhere else that won't bug out and give me a page not found error? It actually loads the page for a quick second and then redirects to a 404 message.

    And yes, IE is a designer's nightmare. I've heard there's a web developer's toolbar for it similar to the one in Firefox but haven't tried it yet. Something like Firebug would be even more valuable to have too.

    Thanks!

    Wow, this has gotten a bit off topic...

    To fix the formatting issues above, I failed to include this in the install requirements (which I've now added above).

    IMPORTANT: This extension requires the extension HTML Formatter also be installed.

    Thanks Stash for the link. That worked.

    The editor seems to generally work but there are some style issues. Maybe there are some conflicts in it with the Vanilla Green theme that I'm using. The dropdowns for font and style currently render off to the left somewhere (if at all) and the text doesn't appear in them so I can't tell what I'm about to select. The font size arrows also don't work and there is no number in the display.

    The editor is wider than the default (non-editor) comment box so it's currently sticking out over the main menu a little (which is in the right margin for this theme.) There might be a width setting to play with but I haven't look for it yet.

    I'll keep playing around to see if I can figure out where these bugs are coming from but I'm not familiar with any code in the YUIEditor (and I'm new to Vanilla within the month as well) so if someone already knows the answer and can save me some time please do share.

    Thanks.

    Hi all! I've been quietly lurking around the past couple days (Vanilla Rules!) and I've run into this same problem. The fontstyle, fontsize and paragraphstyle all rendering off to the left of the form in cyberlimbo so you can't see them.

    I tracked it down to skin.css, and more specifically, to this line of code:

    li.yui-toolbar-groupitem{text-indent:-200px;float:left;}

    Minus TWO-HUNDREDpx!?!? Are they out of control? SO I changed that to 0px, and lo and behold, my fields filled up right. But NOW the problem is that along with those three fields being shifted off to the left, there's a text label for every button on the form that were shifted left, and they also shift back. This means that the bold button not only has its big B symbol, but now has the word 'Bold' scribbled inadequately across it. The same for all the other buttons on the form.

    It's pretty cluttery.

    I'm still looking for a way to invisible them all up. I notice that each one has their own id; yui-gen1, yui-gen2, etc, but I don't see any place to stylize those. Still looking, but it's a start!

    This is what I suspected the problem was, the CSS works when the editor is in a stand-alone window but not when embedded (for want of a better word) in a page with its own (rather heavy and complicated) CSS structure.

    You're right. I got it to work if I added these three lines into vanilla.css:

    #yui-gen0 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen16 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen2 {text-indent:0px;}

    They move the text that's printed when the menus are closed, so that they will show what's been selected, but now the problem is to figure out how to show what CAN BE selected when the menus are open (for fontstyle and paragraph style).

    Final Correction: It will work exactly as intended if you leave the line from my earlier comment alone (li.yui-toolbar-groupitem{text-indent:-200px;float:left;}) and just add these FIVE lines to your vanilla.css file:

    #yui-gen0 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen16 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen2 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen1 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen17 {text-indent:0px;}

    Talk about something that took ALL STINKING DAY to figure out!

    It was a good day. :)

    That's great! How many tasty beverages am I in for if I also tell you that gen 44,45, 63 and 64 orient the padding and border fields on the insert image dialog? :)

    #yui-gen44 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen45 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen63 {text-indent:0px;}
    #yui-gen64 {text-indent:0px;}

    44 and 45 are for when it first comes up, and for some reason you need 63 and 64 for after you've uploaded a picture but haven't made changes on the dialog yet.

    The version I used is the same one I downloaded from here, with only those lines changed. I can edit easily using Firefox, and the output looks good in both Firefox and IE.

    http://www.crashjoplin.com/joplingabpad/

    What I've decided to do is, since I already have a forum (phpBB) I'm using Vanilla to just produce separate, full-length articles by myself. It's very well suited for generating site content. I've removed from all member roles the ability to start new discussions, because, honestly, fellas, you could give some (most?) forum members the most sophisticated layout and design tools ever invented, and the articles they post are still going to come up sounding like, "OMGWTFBBW!!!!! pwned! im a n00b! l33t lolz @ m3!"

    I have to accept that this is a Beta version, and that Yahoo! is doing a great job with it. With Firefox it works great, and with IE I could hardly get it to function at all, because it kept loading the whole interface after every click. But the output looks wonderful!

    ...and I still don't get no fine Australian beers...

    :sigh:

    Thanks for your`s fantastic work with this editor. I was waiting for it too. All seems to be ok, but I have one small problem with YUI. Under Opera 9.24, Firefox and IE 7, YUI working very well. But under IE 6, YUI is very slow and nearly blocking IE during edition of the message (comment) in editor window.

    Anyone have this problem too?

    Apparently I've messed up my "discussion_form.php" file because when I click to start a new discussion I get-

    Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting ',' or ';' in \discussion_form.php on line 60

    Now I'm stuck... Below is the script from line 60 on. How do I fix this??

    echo '<div class="Submit">
    <input type="submit" name="btnSave" value="'.$this->Context->GetDefinition(($Discussion->DiscussionID > 0) ? 'SaveYourChanges' : 'StartYourDiscussion').'" class="Button SubmitButton StartDiscussionButton" onclick="'
    ."YUIwriteBack();'."Wait(this,'".$this->Context->GetDefinition('Wait')."');"
    .'"/>';
    $this->CallDelegate('DiscussionForm_PostSubmitRender');
    echo '<a href="'.(!$this->IsPostBack?'javascript:history.back();':'./').'" class="CancelButton">'.$this->Context->GetDefinition('Cancel').'</a>
    </div>';

    $this->CallDelegate('DiscussionForm_PostButtonsRender');

    echo'</form>
    </fieldset>
    </div>';

    Nice website with houseblogs.net

    I have a question, does this extension include the latest YUI Text Editor?

    Additionally, how does this work with the following extensions: Dojo Files, Attachments 2.1 & Inline Images 1.3
  7.  # 38
    No, it's not the latest version of YUI Text Editor. I need to do that upgrade and testing but it's low on the priority list so it will probably not come soon.

    I've not done any testing with those extensions, either, so the most I could say is that it wasn't designed to support other extensions that embed media in to the text presentation. I'd suggest looking in to the YUI plugins as someone's already written an image uploader, for example.

    I really want to use this editor, but whenever I enable YahooUI and try to post, it tells me the discussion can't be found. Any ideas? Disabling it, and/or enabling another editor allows me to post!

    *edit* Nevermind.. I had edited the comment form, but not the discussion form.. so it'd show the YahooUI editor but wouldn't post.

    *further edit* This does in fact worth w/ Dojo Files, Inline Images, and Multiple Uploads/Attachments... although I can't get quotes to work! Looks like I gotta add some hacking!
