How many people have had a play with this? I just downloaded it cuz jerm linked me up and i continue to be impressed with googles ethos. It appears to me that theyre very much going down the simple but kickass route which is nice.
As I use a mac, they don''t have a client. I followed all their instructions for iChat, Adium and Trillian but could not get it working.
Most disapointing. I know it is still beta, but I would have thought a company like good would have been more inclusive by making two version of thier software.
I have tried MSN for mac, and I dislike it. I use adium as it is open source, should support all chat formats (all except google talk it seems. but I don't understand as it is just a fancy jabber service).
I get to write all my own nifty features, as well as changing anything I dislike about the application (not much now).
ahh, sorry, i misread your post. I thought you meant you couldnt get any of the named clients working on mac not that you couldnt plug googletalk into them.
I've been using Google Talk with Gaim. The official client is decent. It's a little inconveniant that we can't chat using other protocols. Google's working on it though. Until they support aim and msn, I'll continue using Google Talk with Gaim.

from what i've read it's using the Jabber/XMPP protocol but not connecting to the wider jabber network action yet. Supposedly something they're working on as well.
I've been using Google Talk with Adium at home. Just another way to get ahold of me.
I've also been using it at work with the official client because it blends in extremely nicely with Google Sidebar and Gmail. Now I only wish I had more people to chat with, because I know exactly one person trying it. :P
oh i'm by no means suggesting people should use it... i cant see all the people i chat with on msn swopping over in the near future so i probably wont be using it much atall. I was more pointing out that it was a nice piece of software.
those that can't get it working in iChat don't have Tiger, most likely. Tiger is needed.
it would be great to have the actual talk function working between Mac and PCs, but otherwise for Mac people, it's probably not worth it to setup through Jabber just to use IM.
Well... I did all that. And di it again, but... I have it working now. I have 9 computers on my home network (no need to ask about why I have so many computers in my house), and I have high security on my wireless network.
I turned off the security on the wireless (well, lowered it) and turned off the firewall and it now works.
I have no idea WHY those would have hindered my use of this, but it works now.
is anyone not getting a little weary as to how much google is starting to infiltrate your life little by little? or am i just a little bit too paranoid? i dont know, call me crazy if ya like but i dont like the rate they are growing at

I'll call you a little on the paranoid side, but honestly, it's still really your choice whether you wish to use google or not. After all, you can quit using it any time you want. Like any tech company they expand and shrink and honestly, they probably know very little about you other than maybe your name and that you might be using one or two of their services. I'd actually be more weary about the maker of the operating system you're running, there's a greater tendancy there to reveal who you are and what you're doing. Just because there's an "update" doesn't necessarily mean it will be one in your favor.
i don' t like that Gtalk doesn't popup a "hey someone's trying to invite you".. i'm set to Busy, though.. so i guess it makes sense. but it would be nice if if did a little dance or flashed or something..
or maybe it does.. i have "incoming chat" notification turned off.. hmm

oh yeah, i agree and i do exercise my right of choice which is why i only use their search engines. i did install GTalk but i just wanted to check it out for myself coz a mate of mine was raving about it but ill probably uninstall it sometime soon.
Nag, that's probably the best piece of internet fiction I've seen in a long time. However anyone buying into it would probably have to be get committed and checked out, because that's a pretty thin stretch of the imagination to play things out like that. I think I was laughing through the later half of it though, because anyone who's not diluted and intelligent would still be developing their own software without paying attention really to what the big guys are doing.
Rule of thumb, no matter how big a current "giant" is, there's always a bigger sleeping giant elsewhere that could come along at any moment and crush its oppressor :D It will happen eventually. Then again, there's always linux too.
Google Talk had a slight update today. Grab the latest copy if you haven't yet. I can't tell what the heck was updated. All I know is that I'm going to have to reshack the damn thing to clean it a little more. *And yes I know it already is pretty minimal.*
Who here thinks that Mark should be the next google, hell, he should be the next internet! Based on Marks head, we should make a new http-standard and browsers only to work on something that Mark wrote, wake up people, coke and pepsi are the same thing :D
lech: obviously you never saw the corporation. now that is a scary movie :))
but, at any rate, obviously id take that stuff on with a pinch of salt. i dont buy into to every single word they are saying but i wouldnt disregard it either. obviously, that flash is purely speculation and not based on a shred of evidence but it still makes you think - "what if..." :p
See, there's a bit of difference between large corps and the government. As soon as you stop feeding those corps money, they start shrinking like cancer under chemo. If I feel that a corporation is doing something against the greater good, I'll happily quit paying for the services and products they provide and urge everyone else to quit using them as well.
It's a bit like getting millions of people to not buy any music for a day or a week because you dislike the RIAA, they'll feel the sting of that action. If you repeat that action for say, a month or year, they'll eventually have to downsize. At least that's the theory.
